Gabrielle is a second year BBSRC DTP PhD student at the University of Nottingham and has a Bsc in Animal Biology from Nottingham Trent University. Her PhD project looks at the nutritional value of underutilised crops as potential ruminant feed; paying particular attention to antinutritonal factors within the crops.
Gabrielle will analyse the antinutritional content of soluble extracts from mezquite pod samples. These extracts will then be used to determine the properties of these extracts, using chicken trials to assess the impact on amino-acid absorption. This study will lead to work looking at the mechanism of action for these compounds as well as a study of an in vitro digestibility system to determine whether these extracts have a significant impact on protein digestibility.
